Taiwanese Residential VoIP Equipment Sees Strong Shipment Growth in 1Q '06
July 14, 2006

According to Market Intelligence Center (MIC), in the first quarter of 2006, total shipment volume of Taiwanese residential VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) equipment soared 108.7% year-on-year to 5.5 million units, with shipment value surging 110.3% year-on-year to US$322.6 million. Shipment value growing more than shipment volume is attributed to the fact that combined share of high-ASP IAD (Integrated Access Device) and E-MTA (Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter) products already hit 90%, pushing ASP (Average Selling Price) to US$59, inching up 1% year-on-year.

The growth in the shipment volume of VoIP equipment in the first quarter can be attributed to a number of factors. Due to rapid growth in VoIP subscribers in North America, TA (Terminal Adapter) demand by the retail market and ITSPs increased, prompting retail brand vendors to increase their TA orders with Taiwanese makers. Owing to the expansion of VoIP service points by cable TV operators in North America, shipment of E-MTA (Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter) recorded steady sequential growth in the first quarter. Shipment of IAD (Integrated Access Device) grew on the increased procurement by Western European telecoms. In addition, British Telecom will stop construction of traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) in 2008 and will provide long-distance telephone services via VoIP technology, boosting IAD demand. Large telecoms in South America also had increasing IAD demand.

Thanks to the engagement of telecoms in the VoIP market and price competition, Taiwanese residential VoIP equipment shipment volume is expected to jump 70.7% and 47.6% year-on-year respectively in the second and third quarter of 2006, to 6.0 million and 6.9 million units.
